Mental Wellbeing Study
Cihan Institute for Science and Technology

Abstract
In today’s fast-paced academic and professional environments, mental health remains a critical yet often overlooked factor in overall wellbeing. Recognizing this, Cihan Institute’s Department of Health and Social Sciences conducted a comprehensive study on the mental wellbeing of students and staff, aiming to better understand stress levels, coping strategies, and the impact of social support networks.
Introduction
The study originated from a pressing question: How can educational institutions better support the mental wellbeing of their communities? With rising global awareness of mental health challenges, Cihan Institute initiated this program to collect evidence, raise awareness, and design practical support mechanisms tailored to the cultural and social context of Kurdistan.
Methodology
Participants: Over 250 students and 60 staff members across different academic departments.
Tools: Anonymous surveys, guided focus group discussions, and one-on-one interviews.
Themes Studied: Stress management, sleep quality, academic pressure, access to counseling, and community/social belonging.
Key Findings
High Academic Stress: 63% of students reported significant stress during exam seasons.
Social Support as a Buffer: Students with stronger family and peer support networks demonstrated 40% better mental wellbeing scores.
Counseling Gap: While interest in mental health counseling was high, only 12% of participants had accessed such services.
Lifestyle Factors: Adequate sleep and physical exercise were strongly correlated with positive wellbeing outcomes.
Program Outcomes
Development of a Mental Wellbeing Awareness Week at the institute.
Launch of pilot peer support groups for students.
Recommendations for establishing a dedicated counseling unit within the campus.
Recognition and Impact
This study has been recognized as a pioneering initiative in the region, bridging academic research with practical student services. The findings have been shared in a regional Health & Social Sciences Conference attended by international speakers, reinforcing Cihan Institute’s role as a leader in holistic education.
